We have liftoff!!!

Congrats to Will Power and Team Australia for their first win in Las Vegas. Heres to a fantastic 2007 ChampCar season!

Graham Rahal stuffs it into the wall during practice, but you can see what a top notch street circuit this inaugural race took place at. A wide, smooth surface. Numerous passing zones. Balls out corners mixed in with technical sections. A very long, fast, curving front straight. And the most surprisng thing of all was the elevation changes not normally seen. A first class facility and hopefully on the schedule for years to come.

The art of the standing start.

As opposed to the rolling start, which tends to string the cars out at the beginning of a race, the standing start starts a race with cars at from spaced from first to last at half car intervals pulling away in a drag race. The start of any Formula 1 Grand Prix is perhaps the most exciting and dangerous part of the race. 22 900hp state of the art rocket ships on wheels waiting for the lights to go out and head to turn 1 foot planted to the floor is a recipe for either charging through the field, or having your day end before its barely started. Each driver wants to launch from the grid away as cleanly as possible without stalling and spinning the wheels as little as possible to obtain maximum traction. Many a times, the driver through the first corner is the first one to take the checkered flag.

Here is a standing start SNAFU, the 2002 Australian GP where Ralf Schumacher plays leap frog with Rubens Barrichello and proceeds to take out half the field while doing so.

On the flipside, Suzuka Japan 1999. Mika Hakkinen starting 2nd to Michael Schumacher gets a huge jump on the Ferrari despite the attempted chop by Schumacher and cruises to his 2nd consecutive World Championship.

There you have it. The how to do and how not to do a standing start. Hero or zero.
